“Don’t look back, you’re not going that way.”
Mary Engelbreit
A little over a month ago, I chose the quote above for New Year’s Eve. It had been some time since I’d posted a blog, and I wanted to reach out in a way that was fresh and inspiring — something “forward moving” for the year ahead. But then, New Year’s Eve came…and went. And, for both personal and professional reasons, I failed to write a post.
At first, I was disappointed in myself: what kind of blogger misses the chance to write at the start of a new year? Isn’t that the perfect time to reach out to people? To talk about resolutions and change and renewal? But as I thought that question, I had to chuckle, because I realized with a start that that blogger was…me. As a person who’s struggled to stay in the present moment for most of my life, I quite strongly — and quite frankly — do not believe in New Year’s resolutions.
The simple idea of waiting for “tomorrow” to do something good or healthy seems ludicrous to me. The worst kind of procrastination I’ve ever played with. My ever-present “excuse” to continue doing what I’m doing today, until…tomorrow.
So, I had to come up with a new intention for starting over, something that I didn’t have to wait for, something that wasn’t a “special event” to put on my calendar. Something that I knew would always be there, just for me. And what I came up with had been under my nose the whole time: my ever-present, ever life-giving…breath.
For me, suddenly, I knew starting over wasn’t about planning things, or making resolutions, or scheduling goals in my planner. All along, my new start had been my own precious breath.
Because each breath is a new beginning.
Whether it’s long or short…shallow or strong…raspy or clear…each breath is brand new. It is the beginning, it is the start of the “new you.” You don’t have to wait for tomorrow. Just inhale…and exhale…and let the moment begin.

Very interesting, I also have learned to live one day at a time. I don’t hesitate any more when I make a decision.
That’s awesome! 🙂
So great to see you back! I have missed your posts. I so agree about New Year’ Resolutions. Why wait for the perfect day? We can always begin again so every day is the perfect day. Thanks for sharing your post.
Thanks Catherine! It’s good to be back 🙂 I wrote a book — self published — and by God, has that been a draining experience! As well as emotional for me. But I’m going to try to get back to writing here at least a few times a month. As well as get back to reading other people’s posts, like yours!
I look forward to reading it! Congratulations! I am working on one two- it’s quite consuming,
A wonderful post! A reminder to take each breath as the gift it is. Thank you!
Thank you! 😉
